LaFlower named Sheriff's

VALPARAISO | The new year netted a new challenge
for Porter County Sheriff's Cpl. Larry LaFlower
-- a slew of police reports to pour through.
LaFlower, a 12-year veteran of the
department, took over as the department's public
information officer Monday morning, replacing
Lt. Chris Eckert. Eckert returns to the patrol
In his new role, LaFlower is the go-to guy
for reporters and also assists the general
public with records information.
LaFlower said he's always been a people
person and interested in how the department
connects with the residents it serves. He said
the new post also means a sharp change in his
hours, having worked patrol duty for a number of
"It's a little change of pace from working
straight midnights," he said.
Originally from Portage, LaFlower started
out working as an undercover narcotics officer
for the department's Drug Task Force after
joining the department in 1999.
"I pretty much played the undercover role,
making controlled buys," he said.
From there, he worked patrol with his
canine partner Aslan and also trained rookie
patrol officers. He's also been one of the
department's accident reconstructionists.
In his years as an officer, LaFlower's
also been recognized by the Porter County Drunk
Driving Task Force for arresting a high number
of drunk drivers throughout the county and also
recognized last year for saving an elderly
Porter woman from her burning home.
