VALPARAISO | The new year netted a new challenge for Porter County Sheriff's Cpl. Larry LaFlower -- a slew of police reports to pour through.

LaFlower, a 12-year veteran of the department, took over as the department's public information officer Monday morning, replacing Lt. Chris Eckert. Eckert returns to the patrol division.

In his new role, LaFlower is the go-to guy for reporters and also assists the general public with records information.

LaFlower said he's always been a people person and interested in how the department connects with the residents it serves. He said the new post also means a sharp change in his hours, having worked patrol duty for a number of years.

"It's a little change of pace from working straight midnights," he said.

Originally from Portage, LaFlower started out working as an undercover narcotics officer for the department's Drug Task Force after joining the department in 1999.

"I pretty much played the undercover role, making controlled buys," he said.

From there, he worked patrol with his canine partner Aslan and also trained rookie patrol officers. He's also been one of the department's accident reconstructionists.

In his years as an officer, LaFlower's also been recognized by the Porter County Drunk Driving Task Force for arresting a high number of drunk drivers throughout the county and also recognized last year for saving an elderly Porter woman from her burning home.
