VALPARAISO | A Porter County Sheriff's officer is being credited with saving the life of a woman who stopped breathing while in custody at the sheriff's department.

According to authorities, a 50-year-old woman was brought to Porter County Jail for a breath test on suspicion of DUI when she collapsed and stopped breathing.

Officer Michael Spicer initiated CPR and resuscitated the woman, who was then taken by ambulance to Porter Valparaiso Hospital Campus.

The woman, who has not been identified, was not taken into custody immediately. Charges are expected to be filed after test results are obtained from blood and urine tests, officials said.

"This illustrates just how selfless our personnel are," Sheriff David Lain said.

"Typically, we think of officers putting themselves in harms way when they face firearms or violence. Officer Spicer didn't hesitate for a second to save the life of someone he had just arrested. I couldn't be more proud that this is the third act of lifesaving by our officers within the last year," Lain said.
