PORTER COUNTY | With harvest season here, Porter County Sheriff Dave Lain and the Porter County Sheriff's Department hosted a "Commemorative Country Breakfast" last month to recognize the five-year anniversary of a public safety initiative known as "Take Care, We're Farming Around Here". Attendees included those who have contributed to and supported the program since it went countywide five years ago.

Currently, road signs, vehicle magnets, window clings and radio announcements all carry the message to "Take Care, We're Farming Around Here" in a program developed locally in Porter Township by then-trustee Bob Wichlinski with the efforts also of then Porter County Sheriff David Reynolds, then-Boone Township Trustee John Spinks, Radio One Communications President/General Manager Leigh Ellis and others who worked to make the campaign a reality. The local announcements were produced by and first run on Indiana 105 (WLJE-FM) as part of an area-wide attempt to urge drivers to be safe and patient when sharing the road with farm equipment. The breakfast marked the first time supporters gathered as a group.

The Porter County Sheriffs Department, Porter County Highway Department, and Radio One Communications were all recognized at the breakfast for their ongoing support.

For more information about the campaign, call Radio One Communications at (219) 462-6111.

“Take Care” Public Safety Initiative Celebrates 5th Anniversary

Porter County Sheriff Dave Lain announces that the Porter County Sheriff’s Department is hosting a

“Commemorative Country Breakfast” to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the

“Take Care, We’re Farming Around Here” public safety initiative.

The event will be held at The Porter County Sheriff’s Department Training Room on Thursday, September 23, 2010 at 8:00 a.m. (local time).

Members of the press are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Attendees will include those who have contributed to and supported the success of the program since its inception in fall of 1994.  The first road signs, radio advertisements, and vehicle magnets appeared in Porter and LaPorte Counties in support of the program in the spring of 1995.

This will be the first time all the supporters have gathered as a group.

The program was founded by Robert J. Wichlinski who served as Porter Township Trustee from 2003-06.

At the event, Wichlinski will pay special recognition to the Porter County Sheriff’s Department, the Porter County Highway Department and Indiana 105 Radio One Broadcasting for their sustained support.

Wichlinski will also feature the new “window cling” developed to promote the program.  The “window cling” adds to the road signs, radio ads, vehicle magnets, and “dos and don’ts” flyer which have been used over the years to promote the program.
