Cheer on the cops and firemen

Law enforcement officers and firemen take an
oath to protect the community in which they
live. People usually only think of their
local sheriff department or fire department
as the place to call when something bad or
illegal happens.
The individuals that wear these badges do so
much more than enforce the law and save
lives. They help teach kids good habits and
they often participate in community-centered
activities. In 2009, the men and women of
the Porter County Sheriff's Department and
the men and women of the South Haven Fire
Department have associated themselves with
the Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County in
an effort to provide kids with a chance to
be kids.
This will be done by helping the club raise
the resources needed to continue offering
activities run by positive role models at
the club. And also making sure that a
message is sent to these kids that drugs,
alcohol and gang activity are not the
answers to daily problems within their young
lives.
You're invited to the first "Battle of the
Badges" on May 21. Members of the South
Haven Fire Department and the Porter County
Sheriff's Departments will face off in a
basketball game fundraiser. The game will be
played in the gymnasium of the South Haven
Boys & Girls Club (723 Long Run Road,
Valparaiso 46385) and will begin at 6 p.m.
Tickets are available at the door for only
$2 adults & $1 for kids! There will be food,
drinks at the concession stand. Proceeds
from this fundraiser will go directly to the
South Haven Boys & Girls Club's It Just
Takes One campaign.
"The Sheriff's Department and Fire
Departments are looking forward to a
friendly competition on the court and are
proud to be able to help the children in our
community" said South Haven Club Director,
Ron Ranta. "I predict that, "The sheriff's
department will definitely out shoot the
fire department or the fire team will
extinguish all the competition".
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County is
proud of our servicemen and women as well as
our nation's "first responders," the
sheriff's department, police and
firefighters, that freely sacrifice of
themselves so that the rest of us can enjoy
safety and freedom!
The Sheriff's Department and Fire Department
can always benefit from some encouragement
from members of the community. So come out
and cheer them on as they play to support
the children from our community. They spend
each day doing a great job guarding our
lives and property, often at risk to
themselves. Take time to let them know how
much you appreciate their efforts.
