Promoted to Major

Sheriff David Lain announced the promotion of Capt. Steven Lawrence to the rank of Major for the Porter County Sheriff’s Dept., effective immediately.

Major Lawrence, who was Detective Commander in charge of the Detective Bureau, will continue in that position, but will hold the new rank of Major.  The Major position is outranked only by the Sheriff and Chief Deputy on the department. 

Major Lawrence is a 1982 graduate of Portage High School, and he currently resides in Liberty Township.  He joined the United States Navy in 1983 and served through 1987, including assignment to the USS Coral Sea.  He joined the Porter County Sheriff’s Dept. at a Jail Officer in 1988 and accepted a position as Patrol Officer in 1991.  Major Lawrence has been assigned to the Detective Bureau for the past three years.
