During holiday season in the fight against drunk
driving

The Porter County Sheriff’s Dept.,
along with several other police agencies in Porter County, will conduct extra
patrols to locate intoxicated drivers during the upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday.
The Porter County
Drunk Driving Task Force will sponsor the DWI
patrols through a grant from the Governor’s Task Force on Drugs and Alcohol.
Other police agencies involved in the extra patrols are: Valparaiso Police,
Portage Police, Hebron Police, Chesterton Police, Kouts Police, Porter Police,
and Burns Harbor Police. The DWI patrols consist of officers from these
agencies who work during their scheduled time off and earn overtime money from
the task force. The officers will work either in groups or individually to
locate motorists who are intoxicated and make arrests. The extra patrols will be conducted through the
holiday weekend, focusing especially on the eve prior to Thanksgiving (Nov.
21st). Statistics in Porter County have shown an increased number of crashes and
DWI arrests on this date in the past several years. The Porter County Drunk Driving Task Force has
initiated efforts in the county in the past several years to combat impaired
drivers on the roadways. Some of the other activities of the Task Force
include sponsoring billboards with messages against drunk driving, and
sponsoring the Officers of the Year for DWI arrests for the police agencies in
Porter County. |
