Sheriff Reynolds Honored

With Outstanding Service Award

Sheriff David M. Reynolds was honored Wednesday, Oct. 24th, when he received the Outstanding Service Award from the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence.  The award is given to only one police officer each year in the State of Indiana for efforts to combat domestic violence. The awards ceremony was held at the Marriott Hotel in Indianapolis.  The Sheriff was nominated for the award by The Caring Place, a women’s shelter for domestic battery victims in Valparaiso. The Caring Place Director, Charlotte Conjelko, indicated that Sheriff Reynolds has been instrumental “in the coordinated community approach against domestic violence.” The nomination letter also indicated, “Sheriff Reynolds was one of the first law enforcement officers in our county to stand up and take a stance against domestic violence- and do something about it.” The letter also commented about Sheriff Reynolds insistence batterers be held accountable for their actions, and how his policies on the police response greatly improved action being taken against offenders.  Sheriff Reynolds has also been an integral part of new recruits taking domestic violence training at the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Training Center.  The Sheriff is a Board Member of the Center and heavily involved in efforts to have new officers receive the training. The Sheriff has also put information about domestic violence and available resources for victims on the Department’s web-site. He has also helped with efforts to put together a video to be unveiled next month in Northwest Indiana on domestic violence.  Sheriff Reynolds stated, “I am honored that The Caring Place nominated me for this award. I have the utmost respect for The Caring Place and what they do. Over the years, law enforcement has made great strides against domestic violence and it’s largely attributed to The Caring Place.”
