Runners, walkers invited to winter 5K race

Runners and walkers who don't want to wait until spring are invited to the fifth annual Foot Pursuit 5K.

The organizers say the weather, which has included blistering cold, knee-deep snow or mud in past years, is part of the challenge of the race.

The five-kilometer (3.1-mile) race is set for 9 a.m. March 6 at Sunset Hill Farm County Park, located just south of Valparaiso.

Cost to participate is $10, or $16 to also receive a T-shirt, if money is received before Friday. The cost the day of the race is $20. Runners will be served fruit and other food in the morning, and there will be a hog roast after the race. There will be prizes for people wearing costumes.

Scott Hartz, race organizer, said runners will be tested not only by the weather but also the wooded trails and rolling hills at the park. He called the Foot Pursuit 5K an extreme type of race. If the race takes place after a large snowfall, parking will be available across the street at Roadhouse Bar.

The Porter County Sheriff's Office, where Hartz is a police officer, is sponsoring the race. Proceeds will benefit the Porter County chapter of the American Red Cross, the Sunset Hill Interpretive Center and the Timothy Hecht Scholarship.

To register, visit www.active.com and do an event search for Foot Pursuit.

"The Recycling & Waste Reduction District of Porter County will be on hand at the Foot Pursuit to help recycle our waste!

Please be sure to use the available bins for plastics, and stop by their website for information."
