About The Office

The Porter County Sheriff’s Office has over 170 employees to patrol the county roads, maintain the security of the jail that houses over 400 inmates on a daily basis, protect the courts, and serve all court paperwork. Porter County is the 9th largest county out of 92. There are over 400 square miles within Porter County, which extends from Lake Michigan to the Kankakee River.

Although Porter County consists of over 160,000 residents, approximately 70,000 residents live in the unincorporated areas. The Patrol Division patrols over 700 square miles of county roads and handle over 40,000 police incidents a year.

Our population size combined with the vast geographical area we patrol present constant challenges for our law enforcement officers. It is critical that we have a partnership between our organization and you, the residents of Porter County, to maintain a secure community.

A commitment to inclusiveness is a personal decision that comes from a belief that every person is a treasure. It also represents an institutional challenge. We believe that Northwest Indiana's diversity is its strength.
